How to adjust your goals when they aren’t working

If you’re like me, you probably set goals at the beginning of this year. You probably took the time to think through it, be intentional about it, and plan to reach your goals throughout the year. But the truth is, that sometimes even with the best of intentions, things don’t work out like we planned. For this girl, that has been a hard lesson to learn. I like to plan for things and then have them happen like I planned. Over the last few years, I’ve grown to be more flexible in this. I’ve realized that sometimes we have to let life happen and trust in God’s plan more than our own. And sometimes that means that the goals we set, won’t work for us as our life and season changes. But when your goals aren’t working, you can adjust. You can make changes to those goals to better fit your season now.

Adjusting your goals

As we go through this year, I’ve come to realize that some of my goals from January just aren’t working for me anymore. Things I dreamed about and hoped to accomplish probably won’t happen this year. It’s not because I don’t want them to anymore. It’s not because I gave up on trying. But it’s because life has changed and shifted and God has put me on a path that I didn’t see coming. Even when we are intentional about our life, we can’t always predict how life will unfold for us. But when we find ourselves in a place like this where our goals aren’t aligning with where we are at in our lives, we can adjust. If you’re needing to adjust your goals, take a look at what you wrote down when you set your goals. Think about why you set the goal in the first place and why it isn’t working for you now. Then adjust the goal to better fit your needs and your season.

Letting go of goals

If you’ve tried to adjust your goal and it still doesn’t seem to fit, it might be time to let it go. Letting go of goals can be hard, especially when it is something you really wanted to make happen. For example, I set a goal this year to write a book. And while I still feel in my heart that this goal will happen at the right time, that time isn’t now. As the year progressed, I realized that I have more life to live and more to learn before I put words on paper. In this season, I’m not mean to reach this goal. And although it’s been hard to let it go, I know that it will come back when the time is right.

Making new goals

While you are working to adjust your current goals to better fit your season, new goals may come up too. There’s no rule that says we can’t set new goals in the middle of the year. In fact, I think it works better that way when you set goals based on your current season rather than trying to figure out the whole year on January 1st. Setting goals as you go and making new goals for new seasons will help you to keep your goals aligned with your life and allow you to live more intentionally. If there is a new need in your life or gap in your goals that needs to be filled, set a new goal.

The process of setting and achieving goals can be up and down at times. We set out to make the best goals and work hard to achieve them. But in the end, God has a plan for our life and business and the path that we take. We need to be intentional with how we set goals but flexible in adjusting our goals as we live our lives.
